slap, on nap.

If you didnt see it, the following was put on my index page upon the ruling to shut down Napster
Your Orders:
  1. Get the Latest version of Napster
  2. Get some kinda tool to record CDs to mp3
  3. Convert ALL of your music to mp3 format
  4. Get online, open napster.
  5. Let the trading begin.
  6. While Downloading, send emails to the RIAA and A & M Records telling them they can
"PUCKER UP AND KISS YOUR ASS"
Napster was kind enough to put up their Snail Mail Addresses, too
  7. Trade as much as you can, kiddies.
We all were going to buy the albums anyhow, but now we'd rather spend 10 times as much on a CDROM burner.

so I get this response:

I know you are going to eat me alive for this, but I hate that you think Napster
is a good idea. They are nothing more than technical theifs. I was more than
pleased to hear that a judge had shut them down and irritated to find out that
they were then given a stay. These guys are making a fortune off of the creative
talent of others. They are bottom feeders and repugnant. Bands struggle for years
before they make any money from their blood, sweat, tears, and sacrafices over the
years. Napster is taking that hard earned money away from them. If we want to
teach the music business a lesson, figure out how to punish the fat cat producers
and labels, but continue to pay the bands. We are all out there working to make
a living, as much as you hate the corporate world! Do not forget you too are a
participant of a truly over-paid industry as much as I am......

of course there's a retort...

Napster was created as a way to trade music files between people. Most
likely, the original idea came from a geek who was thinking, "It would
be cool if my friends and I could trade our music - it's be a lot easier
than emailing them or plucking them off of newsgroup servers." If that
wasn't the case, I'd be highly surprised. Their product makes nothing
off of the actual users, anyway.

So are Music Agents, Trophy Spouses, and 90% of the other non-musically
inclined suits in the music industry.

> They are bottom feeders and repugnant.

So are the above, but guess what, The napster guys wrote and coded their
own software and GAVE THE SHIT AWAY FOR FREE. When's the last time the
recording industry gave out unlimited copies of anything useful?

Again: So the fuck what?
So does pretty much every human on the planet.

Most people don't even get to spend their blood, sweat, and tears doing
something they enjoy, and when it all comes out in the end, those people
are immensely shit on by those with money and have probably eaten rice,
noodles, and if they're lucky a little gamy meat off of some vermin they
managed to kill.

Musicians dont have an exclusive on the excuse of "I worked hard to get
here". MOST OF US work hard to get where we're at, and most of us dont
get dickall for it...

...and we don't get to be on tv, either.

> Napster is taking that hard earned money away from them.

...and most people's companies screw them out of money, too. You don't
see congress giving them special hearings to deal with it, do you?

I dont see many bands who's music is traded widely having financial
troubles from lack of sales.

Wasn't portable recordable casettes supposed to put musicians in the
poorhouse about 20 years ago? Didnt congress put a tax on every blank
tape sold? (yes.) Do you honestly think the artists see any of that
money?

I got one thing to say to artists that complain they're losing money
from sales:
"Learn to fucking tour with a worthwhile live show and
think again before you buy sports car #4, sparky."

> We are all out there working to make a living, as much as you hate

That's the truth. I get paid a crapload of money for really nothing
more than havign a brain and using it creatively and teaching myself to
write webcode from scratch and understand how it works.

If you wanna learn to do what I do and underbid me and take my job away
from me? Go ahead. Crack open a bok and start learnin'. I still got 3
years of making $253 a week and eatin' ramnen noodles nightly while
gettin' experiene over you.

Do I bitch when someone takes something I wrote and uses it? hell no.
Do i willingly give advice to people when they ask for help coding? I
sure do.

Do I try to get people to learn how their machines work so companies
like AOL don't keep trying to take their money by selling them services
they dont need? Yepper again.

...and I'm no saint, last i checked. I tell plenty of people to go fuck
themselves when they ask the same thing twice without trying to learn it
the first time.

--------

As another side of it, why the hell isnt the RIAA attacking the whole of
USENET? Because they can't - that's why. Too many servers.

Too easy for Bobby down the street with a block of IP addresses from his
local Baby Bell to set up yet another free newsgroup server for his
buddies to put pirated anything on. When the RIAA shows up with their
nasty cease and desist letters, Little Bobby promptly tells them to fuck
off. when tehy come to the door with their lawyers, Bobby takes a big
magnet to his hard drive and now they can spend a month subpoenaing
companies for traffic logs to get evidence against him and maybe fin him
later on.

In this time:
1) They've been able to further prove what gigantic moneygrubbing
assholes they are.
2) A half-dizen other kids are building their own servers to trade the
shit with, using konwledge they learned from bobby or from the same
place he learned it from.

Yeah, napster is really nothing more than another really easy to use app
that techheads dont really NEED, but it makes our lives easier but not
having to recompile the song from 50 usenet postings. Kill it, go
ahead. There are already clones out there, and not all of them use
centralized servers to organize the trading.

Maybe next the RIAA should chase down mIRC and shut down its filesharing
capability!

heh.
